The international film community is marking the passing of the German actor Udo Kier, who died at the age of 81. The death was confirmed by his long-time partner following his passing in a Palm Springs hospital.

Early in his career, Kier achieved cult recognition through collaborations with the artist and filmmaker Andy Warhol, appearing in films such as Flesh and Blood for Dracula. He became a favored collaborator for prominent European auteurs, including Lars von Trier, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Werner Herzog, often taking on roles characterized as eccentric or villainous.

Audiences recognized Kier from studio productions like the science fiction film Blade, the disaster epic Armageddon, and the comedy Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
