Divers have brought a significant archaeological find to the surface of Lake Iznik, Turkey: an expansive, 400-square-meter Roman mosaic. The intricate artwork, believed to have once adorned the entrance of a Roman-era palatial structure, showcases sophisticated craftsmanship from a bygone era.

This discovery occurs as the region prepares for a major religious observance. The ongoing excavation of the submerged Basilica of Saint Neophytos, located approximately two meters beneath the lake's surface, has been underway since 2015. The unveiling of the mosaic is timed just before the scheduled visit of Pope Leo XIV on November 28, 2025, which marks the 1,700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea.

The convergence of this ancient art and the modern commemoration elevates the historical profile of Iznik, the site of ancient Nicaea, positioning it as a nexus of profound cultural and spiritual importance. Deputy Culture and Tourism Minister Gökhan Yazgı emphasized the exceptional value of the basilica and related findings in illuminating the region's deep heritage. In preparation for this event, Turkish authorities have formally inaugurated the basilica's visitor center to promote Iznik as a key destination for cultural and religious pilgrimage.

Pope Leo XIV's apostolic journey, spanning November 27 to December 2, 2025, includes the visit to Iznik as part of a wider trip encompassing Turkey and Lebanon, aimed at honoring the seminal First Council of Nicaea and fostering interfaith understanding. The First Council of Nicaea, convened in 325 AD, was a foundational moment for early Christianity, establishing key doctrinal principles. The mosaic's emergence now offers a tangible link to this ancient narrative, inviting deeper contemplation on the enduring nature of human belief systems across millennia.
