Strong Demand and High Prices at Ludlow Market Easter Show and Sale

Edited by: Ed_dev Ed

The Easter show and sale at Ludlow Market on April 14 witnessed robust demand for high-quality livestock across various categories. Lambs with superior conformation commanded premium prices, with the champion pen awarded to Earl of Plymouth Estates and acquired by A H Griffiths Butchers. Spring lambs were particularly sought after, driven by weekend trade demands. Butchers' hoggets also experienced a strong turnout, with the highest price reaching £178. Export and lighter weight hoggets were in high demand, while larger hoggets faced reduced popularity due to their sheer volume. Auctioneer Michael Thomas highlighted the anticipated need for hoggs in the following week to facilitate factory restarts after the bank holiday. The bull trade remained vigorous, with a total of 26 fat bulls sold and the top price reaching £3,446.33. Prime cattle also saw a substantial turnout, featuring a mix of steers and heifers. GW Roberts secured top honors in both the heifer and steer classes. Cattle exhibiting superior finish attracted premium prices. The cull cow trade demonstrated significant demand, fueled by a national shortage that drove average prices to £2,030 per head. Cull sheep also experienced a strong trade, with no shortage of demand, and the best continental ewes reached a top price of £300. Previously, on April 11, the Ludlow Market store sale saw 411 store cattle sold, with the top-priced steer fetching £2,540. Cows on offer generated considerable interest, with the top-priced cow reaching £1,970. The next sale is scheduled for April 25. Auctioneers Michael Thomas and James Amphlett encourage buyers and sellers to contact them for further details. A free on-farm grading service is also available.
