Sofia Coppola Shelves Dunst Period Drama, Eyes Britney Spears Biopic (edit before publishing)

(edit before publishing) Director Sofia Coppola has officially abandoned plans for a period drama collaboration with actress Kirsten Dunst, citing that the material felt too somber for the current cultural climate. This decision concludes what would have been the fourth feature film partnership between the director and Dunst, whose previous collaborations include the 2006 film *Marie Antoinette* and 2017’s *The Beguiled*.
Coppola stated her current artistic motivation is a desire to bring "hope and beauty" to a challenging era, while also needing to avoid work that might be perceived as superficial. The collaboration between Coppola and Dunst has been a notable fixture in American cinema, beginning with *The Virgin Suicides* in 1999, followed by *Marie Antoinette* in 2006, and *The Beguiled* in 2017.
Following the shelving of the historical drama, Kirsten Dunst has reportedly secured a role in the sequel to the 2025 film *A Minecraft Movie*, which grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide. The sequel, slated for a July 23, 2027 release from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, will see Jared Hess return to direct. Dunst is set to portray the character Alex, joining returning cast members including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge.
Concurrently, Coppola confirmed a strong interest in directing a biographical film about pop icon Britney Spears, stating she is "obsessed" with the narrative. The director has been studying Spears' memoir, *The Woman In Me*, and reviewing past interviews, expressing particular focus on the tumultuous 2007 period, referencing the incident where Spears struck a paparazzo’s car with an umbrella. Coppola characterized this moment as a "punk moment" and suggested Spears has since evolved into a powerful "symbol of women's rights."
Coppola acknowledged that director Jon Chu is reportedly developing a separate adaptation of Spears' memoir, and that Universal Pictures is also developing a project. However, Coppola indicated her intent to direct the film herself should the other efforts not materialize. This potential project contrasts with Coppola's most recent directorial work, the 2023 biographical drama *Priscilla*, which depicted the life of Priscilla Presley and premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival. *Priscilla* earned Cailee Spaeny the Volpi Cup for Best Actress and grossed $33.1 million globally against a $20 million budget.
