Excessive Social Media Use Linked to Brain Health Concerns in Youth

The Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) has issued a warning about the potential dangers of excessive social media use, particularly for children and adolescents. Research suggests that excessive social media consumption can negatively impact brain development, leading to changes in regions related to emotions, motivation, and reward systems.

Studies have also shown that excessive short-video consumption can reduce concentration, memory, decision-making abilities, and creativity. Furthermore, social media can contribute to negative self-perception, particularly regarding body image, and increase rates of depression and suicidal thoughts in young people.

The SEN recommends setting daily limits on mobile phone and social media use, prioritizing educational and creative digital content, and fostering critical thinking skills in children and adolescents. They also emphasize the importance of engaging in non-digital activities such as reading, outdoor exercise, and spending time with friends and family.
