Vacation Stress: How to Avoid 'Reposera Depression' and Truly Relax

A new study reveals that many people struggle to truly relax on vacation, experiencing what's known as "vacation stress" or "reposera depression." This phenomenon, characterized by persistent anxiety and difficulty disconnecting from work, can negatively impact both mental and physical well-being.

Dr. Ingrid Brunke, a psychiatrist at the German Hospital's Institute of Neurosciences, explains that chronic stress can lead to imbalances in neurotransmitters, increasing the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, as well as anxiety and depression.

Silvia Sumell Canalda, a psychologist and professor at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), highlights the cognitive, emotional, physical, and behavioral symptoms of vacation stress. These include difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and even depression.

Experts recommend taking advantage of technology to help disconnect. Using vacation mode on WhatsApp, for instance, can silence work-related conversations and minimize interruptions.

Dr. Brunke emphasizes the importance of deep rest in the initial days of vacation, allowing the mind and body to reset. Subsequent days can be filled with planned activities, but with ample time for relaxation and engaging in activities that stimulate both body and mind, such as group games, reading, or physical exercise.
