Ghana's leading mental health advocacy summit, The Wholesome Mind Xperience, convenes on October 10, 2025, with the primary objective of initiating the reconstruction of the Special Ward at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital. This initiative aims to transform the nation's mental healthcare landscape, culminating in the establishment of Ghana's first Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
The PICU will offer specialized care to individuals experiencing acute mental health crises, ensuring a safe and dignified environment. A fundraising campaign of GHS 4 million has been launched to support this project, with donations accepted through platforms like ExpressPay, GoFundMe, and MTN Mobile Money. The Ghana Revenue Authority has designated the project as a "Worthwhile Cause," making donations tax-deductible for the 2025 tax year, which is expected to encourage contributions from both corporations and individuals. The summit, themed "Mental Health Awareness for All Ages," will be held at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra, featuring panel discussions with experts, wellness activities, and discussions focused on promoting mental well-being and resilience across all age groups. Organizers stress the importance of sustained commitment and adequate infrastructure for improving mental health outcomes, stating, "It is time that we reminded them that they are not forgotten." The planned PICU aligns with World Health Organization (WHO) standards, aiming to provide safe, respectful care that promotes recovery for Ghana's most vulnerable patients. The Special Ward, which has long supported those in greatest need, is currently in poor condition, making the transformation into a PICU a crucial step in addressing gaps in Ghana's mental healthcare system.
