Gloucestershire County Council, in partnership with the Department for Transport (DfT), is utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to evaluate the condition of rural roads.
The project seeks to enhance the efficiency and precision of road assessments, particularly on unclassified roads. This effort is in line with the DfT's 'Transport Artificial Intelligence Action Plan,' which encourages the adoption of AI in the transportation sector.
The council has earmarked £10 million in its 2025/26 budget for road upgrades, with an emphasis on rural areas. This funding is part of a larger £100 million investment aimed at improving Gloucestershire's road infrastructure.
This initiative reflects a broader national trend, with the DfT having previously invested in AI to analyze road markings for safety and maintenance purposes.
