The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) has identified a market stall in Yau Ma Tei selling food products containing Yellow 2, a prohibited coloring agent. The CFS announced on August 1, 2025, that the vendor has been formally notified and instructed to immediately stop selling the items.

The discovery was made during a routine food surveillance operation. A sample from the stall tested positive for Yellow 2, an industrial dye typically used for textiles, leather, paper, and cosmetics. This dye is explicitly banned for consumption in Hong Kong under local legislation, specifically the "Food Adulteration (Colours) Regulations."

The regulations clearly state that selling food for human consumption containing unauthorized colorings is illegal. Offenders face significant penalties, including a maximum fine of HK$50,000 and up to six months imprisonment.

This incident highlights the CFS's ongoing efforts in food safety oversight. In 2023, the CFS initiated 155 prosecutions for breaches of food labeling and composition regulations, demonstrating a commitment to upholding stringent standards. The CFS advises the public to remain vigilant when purchasing food, encouraging them to check labels and choose reputable vendors to ensure products meet safety and quality benchmarks.
