Lebanon Braces for Continued Cold Snap and Hazardous Road Conditions Through December 29, 2025
Edited by: Olha 12 Yo

The Directorate of Meteorology in Lebanon has officially confirmed that the region remains under the influence of a persistent cold air mass originating from the Black Sea area. This atmospheric pressure system is bringing with it sustained weather patterns characterized by biting, strong winds and the threat of icy conditions. Forecasters project that air temperatures will stay significantly below the typical averages for this time of year, extending the chill right up until December 29, 2025.
This prolonged cold front arrives following a preceding weather anomaly where a cyclone, also tracking from the Black Sea region, had already begun to impact the weather situation across the Eastern Mediterranean. Reports previously issued by the Forecasting Department of the General Directorate of Civil Aviation's Meteorological Service indicated that this initial influence caused a noticeable drop in temperatures, increased wind speeds, and the onset of snowfall at elevations exceeding 1,700 meters above sea level.
Wednesday, December 29, 2025, was marked by generally frosty weather accompanied by a substantial decline in mercury readings. On that specific day, powerful wind gusts and precipitation were also observed, leading to the accumulation of snowpack in the high-altitude zones. Such severe conditions severely complicate travel, necessitating extreme caution from drivers, as roadways are highly susceptible to becoming slick and treacherous.
This current period aligns with a broader trend showing that December 2025 has registered slightly cooler than the long-term historical averages for the month. The deviation amounts to approximately 0.7°C below normal. While the average temperature hovered around 12.1°C at the start of the month, it had dipped to 8.3°C by the month's close, signaling an unusually chilly end to the year for the entire area.
The initial low-pressure system responsible for the first wave of cold weather was expected to dissipate entirely by Tuesday morning. However, meteorologists had issued warnings regarding the approach of a new atmospheric disturbance. This incoming system, currently moving from the northwestern parts of Turkey, is set to bring a return of rain and snow. These precipitation events are anticipated to persist through Friday evening, presenting further logistical challenges for road infrastructure and overall traffic safety.
In light of these ongoing forecasts, authorities are strongly urging the public to exercise heightened vigilance. The constant fluctuation in temperature regimes, coupled with precipitation, creates perfect conditions for black ice formation, particularly on bridges and exposed stretches of highway. Citizens are advised to thoroughly inspect their vehicles and, where possible, postpone non-essential travel into mountainous regions until weather conditions stabilize, which is not expected until after December 29, 2025.
