Acupuncture for Sleep Disorders: Limited Evidence Beyond Placebo Effect

Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine technique involving the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body, is often used to treat sleep disorders. Common acupuncture points for sleep problems include those behind the ear, such as Ex Anmian I, II, and G.B.12, as well as points on the ears, hands, and feet. The treatment aims to promote relaxation and overall well-being.

However, conclusive evidence for acupuncture's effectiveness beyond the placebo effect remains elusive. Despite numerous studies, the largest investigation, the GERAC study (2002-2007), found no significant differences between acupuncture and sham acupuncture (placebo). This study involved over 3,500 patients and more than 35,000 treatments.
