Severe Weather System Expected to Impact Greece with Heavy Rain and Storms

Today, a significant change in weather patterns is expected in Greece, starting from the western regions. Rainfall is forecasted from the morning in the Ionian Islands, gradually spreading to coastal areas of Epirus, western Sterea, and the Peloponnese.

Throughout the rest of the mainland, except Thrace, there will be increased cloudiness and generally overcast weather with occasional light local rain. The Aegean Islands are expected to experience longer sunny intervals, with intermittent clouds and local rain in Crete.

The temperature will remain consistent with recent days, reaching around 10-13 degrees Celsius in the north, 15-17 degrees in the western, central, and southern mainland, and approximately 18 degrees in the southern Aegean, including Crete, Rhodes, and Kastellorizo.

In Attica, there is a forecast for plenty of sunshine until midday, but clouds will increase quickly, with a slight chance of light rain in the northern and eastern parts of the region. The temperature is expected to range from 9 to 16 degrees Celsius, with winds from the east at gentle speeds of 3-4 Beaufort.

Thessaloniki will experience a gloomier day with dense cloud cover and light local rain throughout. Temperatures will range from 8-12 degrees Celsius with winds from the east at 2-4 Beaufort.

A new weather system is anticipated to affect the country from today, with thunderstorms expected in the Ionian Islands and heavy rain forecasted for Athens by Thursday evening into Friday afternoon. The severe weather will continue with successive storms expected until December 15.

On Thursday, local rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected across the mainland. Snow is likely in the central and northern mountainous regions. Winds will be from the east-southeast at 4-6 Beaufort, with local gusts reaching up to 7 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea.

Temperatures will see a slight increase, particularly in the south, reaching 14-15 degrees Celsius in the northern mainland and 18-20 degrees Celsius in the Cyclades, Crete, and the Dodecanese.

On Friday, localized rain and scattered thunderstorms are expected in most of the country, except for eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Weather conditions will gradually ease in the northern and western regions, while remaining persistent in the eastern Aegean and parts of the Ionian Sea.

By Sunday, further rain and thunderstorms are expected in the Ionian and eastern Aegean regions, with temperatures showing a slight rise across the country.
