Severe Floods in Himachal Pradesh Lead to Road Closures and Rescue Operations

Severe landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rains have resulted in the closure of over 280 roads in Himachal Pradesh. The state emergency operation center reported that 138 roads were closed on Friday and 150 on Saturday, impacting travel and rescue efforts.

Water from overflowing streams has inundated several houses in Una, prompting local authorities to issue advisories for residents and travelers. The Lahaul and Spiti police have specifically cautioned against crossing the Jahalman Nallah due to rapidly rising water levels.

Rescue operations are ongoing for approximately 30 individuals missing since the flash floods on July 31 in Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla districts. Currently, 28 bodies have been recovered, highlighting the tragic human toll of these weather events.

In total, over 100 fatalities have been reported due to rain-related incidents, with economic losses estimated at around Rs 842 crore from June 27 to August 9. The regional meteorological office has issued an 'orange' alert for heavy rainfall across multiple districts, warning of thunderstorms and potential flash floods.

Officials are particularly concerned about the risk of damage to crops, vulnerable structures, and low-lying areas due to waterlogging and strong winds.
