Ukraine Considers Blocking Telegram Over National Security Concerns

18:28, 10 九月

The head of Ukraine's parliamentary committee on humanitarian and information policy, Nikita Poturaev, stated that Telegram poses a national security threat but does not automatically warrant a ban. He emphasized that blocking the platform is technically feasible if there is political will.

Poturaev highlighted that Ukraine has successfully restricted various Russian internet resources and social networks in the past. He acknowledged the platform's role in disseminating propaganda and facilitating illegal activities, including recruitment and sabotage.

Despite the risks, he cautioned against a blanket ban, suggesting that it could hinder access to verified information for users. He proposed that alternatives exist, such as local news applications, which could serve as reliable information sources.

In related news, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal reported that the desire among Ukrainians abroad to return home has decreased from 95% at the war's onset to less than 80% today. He noted that many Ukrainians are currently in Poland and Germany, with a significant number in the Czech Republic. Shmyhal emphasized the need for improved safety conditions, housing, and job opportunities to facilitate their return.

Shmyhal also mentioned the planned establishment of a Ministry of Ukrainian Unity to modernize state institutions and address the needs of returning citizens, a project expected to be completed by the end of the year.
