Chilika Lake's Biodiversity Thrives Amidst Conservation Efforts and Invasive Species Challenges

Chilika Lake, Asia's largest brackish water lagoon, teems with diverse wildlife, including Irrawaddy dolphins and over 200 bird species. Conservation efforts are proving successful, with former poachers now acting as guides, protecting the wildlife they once hunted. The Irrawaddy dolphin population is thriving, with sightings of dolphins swimming in sync. Mangalajodi, a freshwater wetland within the Chilika ecosystem, hosts migratory birds like the ruddy shelduck and glossy ibis. However, the invasive water hyacinth poses a significant threat, rapidly spreading and reducing oxygen levels in the water, endangering fish populations. Efforts are needed to control the spread of this invasive species to protect the lake's delicate ecosystem.
