In response, Seychelles launched the Seychelles Marine Spatial Planning (SMSP) program in 2014, aiming to combat the climate crisis. By 2020, the country successfully protected 30% of its marine ecosystem, covering over 410,000 km² of ocean, surpassing the entire territory of Germany.
As Seychelles approaches 2025, it boasts impressive conservation achievements, including 84% protection of mangroves and 99% of seagrass beds. These ecosystems are crucial, as they can absorb four times more carbon dioxide than forests and do so at a rate up to 40 times faster. This initiative is vital for regulating the planet's climate and maintaining ecological balance.
