Saudi and Iranian Foreign Ministers Discuss Regional Tensions Amid Israeli Threats

On October 10, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi held discussions concerning regional developments. This meeting comes at a critical time as Israel is poised to retaliate against Iran following missile attacks from Tehran.

Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, has recently increased political engagement with Iran to help reduce regional tensions, although relations remain strained. Observers note that Tehran is seeking ways to de-escalate the situation, particularly in light of ongoing Israeli threats to its nuclear facilities and the potential for large-scale military conflict.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Bagheri stated that Araqchi's visit aims to advance diplomatic efforts. Araqchi is also scheduled to visit Qatar. The focus of this visit is to curb Israeli aggression and alleviate the suffering of people in Gaza and Lebanon.

The Middle East is currently awaiting Israel's response to the recent Iranian missile attacks, which Tehran launched in retaliation for Israel's increasing military actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon. A senior Iranian official warned Gulf Arab states that allowing the use of their airspace or military bases against Iran would be 'unacceptable' and would provoke a response.

During the meeting, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan discussed the regional situation with Araqchi, highlighting the need for peace and urging Israel to cease its attacks. Araqchi emphasized Iran's commitment to strengthening relations with its neighbors to ensure stability and security, declaring that Iran supports resistance against Israeli occupation.

Araaqchi asserted that Tehran is not afraid of war and has repeatedly stated its desire not to escalate tensions, while also preparing to handle any situation that may arise.
