The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards are set to highlight the achievements of some of the most prominent figures in UK sports this year. The ceremony will take place on December 17, 2024, in Salford, Greater Manchester, and will be broadcast live on BBC One. This annual event recognizes the sportsperson who has made the most significant impact over the past year, with public voting determining the winner.
This year’s nominees include notable athletes such as Keely Hodgkinson, who won a gold medal in the women’s 800m at the Paris Olympics, and Luke Littler, the youngest player to reach the PDC World Darts Championship final. Other contenders are Olympic triathlon champion Alex Yee, cricket star Joe Root, England footballer Jude Bellingham, and Paralympic cycling champion Dame Sarah Storey.
In addition to the main award, the ceremony will also feature categories such as the Young Sports Personality of the Year, with Littler, skateboarding medallist Sky Brown, and Paralympic swimmer William Ellard in contention. The Lifetime Achievement Award will honor cycling legend Mark Cavendish for his record-breaking Tour de France stage wins, while the Unsung Hero Award will recognize grassroots sports contributions.
