Elon Musk Critiques OpenAI at xAI Recruitment Event in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA - October 8, 2024 - Elon Musk launched his new AI company, xAI, at a recruitment event, criticizing OpenAI as "closed and profit-driven." He emphasized xAI's agility and rapid development, comparing it to the SR-71 Blackbird aircraft.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, expressed distrust towards its current leadership, stating, "I don't think we want to have the most powerful AI in the world controlled by someone who is not trustworthy." His comments come amid recent resignations of key OpenAI executives.

The event attracted around 150 attendees and coincided with OpenAI's annual Dev Day. Musk announced that xAI plans to release its models as open source nine months after launch, and he encouraged young talent to join his team.

xAI, launched in July 2023, has gained attention for its Grok AI model and recently secured $6 billion in Series B funding, raising its valuation to $24 billion.
