Italy Plans Nuclear Revival

Italy is set to reintroduce nuclear energy after over 30 years, aiming to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. The government under Giorgia Meloni is revising legislation to facilitate investment in small modular reactors.

Electricity demand is rising, with renewables unable to fully meet needs. New nuclear facilities could supply up to 11% of national demand by 2050.

Experts suggest that a mix of nuclear and renewable energy will stabilize the energy system and boost economic benefits. Lorenzo Tavazzi from TEHA Group emphasizes that nuclear and renewables can complement each other, enhancing decarbonization efforts.

Despite this, there is opposition from environmental groups and mixed public opinion on nuclear energy's role in Italy's future.
