Remembering the Victims of the Foibe Massacres and the Julian-Dalmatian Exodus

On February 10th, Italy commemorates the Day of Remembrance, established in 2004 to honor the victims of the Foibe massacres and the Julian-Dalmatian exodus. Numerous events were organized in Trentino to preserve and renew the memory of all the victims of the Foibe, the exodus of Italians from Istria, Dalmatia, and Fiume, and the dramatic events that marked the eastern border of Italy in the aftermath of World War II.

Among these events are those promoted by the National Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmazia, the provincial committee of Trento, in collaboration with the Province, the Historical Museum Foundation, and the municipalities of Trento and Rovereto. A special television schedule was also organized as part of the History Lab Live project, curated by the Historical Museum Foundation of Trentino.

The commemoration program included a prologue on Saturday morning at 11:00 in Trento, with the laying of a wreath at the sign on Via Vittime delle Foibe (Campotrentino).

On Monday, February 10th, at 10:00 in Rovereto, a mass was celebrated in the Church of Santa Caterina, and at 11:00 a wreath was laid at the commemorative plaque in Largo Vittime delle Foibe, with the participation of authorities and a delegation of Julian-Fiume-Dalmatian exiles.

In the afternoon, at 16:00 in Trento, a wreath was laid at the commemorative plaque in Largo Pigarelli, in the presence of authorities and a delegation of exiles. At 17:00, the official ceremony was held in the representative hall of the municipality, at Palazzo Geremia in Via Belenzani. The event was attended by Francesca Gerosa, Vice President of the Province, Mayor Franco Ianeselli, and Government Commissioner Giuseppe Petronzi. The event was followed by in-depth discussions by Roberto De Bernardis, President of the provincial committee of Anvgd, Giuseppe Ferrandi, Director of the Historical Museum Foundation of Trentino, and journalist, essayist, and Istrian writer Rosanna Turcinovich Giuricin.

On Tuesday, February 11th, at 17:00 in Rovereto, in the hall of the Fondazione Caritro, Rosanna Turcinovich Giuricin presented her latest book "Di questo mar che è il mondo...", promoted by the History Lab in collaboration with the Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmazia.

Also on Monday, February 10th, as part of the History Lab Live project, a special television schedule was planned and broadcast on Telepace Trento, channel 12 of digital terrestrial television, curated by the Historical Museum Foundation of Trentino.

Starting at 14:00 in the Educational space, and repeated in the evening at 21:00, content on Istria, Dalmatia, and Fiume, which passed to Yugoslavia (Accadde quel giorno, curated by Giuseppe Ferrandi), was presented. On February 10th, 1947, the peace treaty between Italy and the Allied powers was signed in Paris, which sanctioned the transfer of Istria, Dalmatia, and Fiume under Yugoslav sovereignty. This decision resulted in the departure from their homeland of hundreds of thousands of people, the vast majority of the local Italian-speaking community.
