Coastal Flood Protection and Ecological Initiatives in Morocco and Eastbourne

On October 15, 2024, a working visit was conducted in the Jerada Province of Morocco by Mr. Abderrahim Houmy, Director General of the National Agency of Water and Forests (ANEF), to assess progress on projects aimed at sustainable development and ecological resilience in the region. These initiatives are part of the 'Forests of Morocco 2020-2030' strategy.

The visit highlighted several key projects, including the sustainable management of natural resources, biodiversity preservation, and sustainable forest ecosystem management. Notable initiatives include the rehabilitation of the Chekhar Natural Park, which aims to reintroduce protected species and develop ecotourism infrastructure, thereby boosting the local economy while preserving biodiversity.

In addition, a significant project focusing on the sustainable use of carob trees in Mahsser, covering 330 hectares with an investment of 7.3 million dirhams, was presented. This initiative involves local cooperatives in a collaborative management model, ensuring both land utilization and income generation from natural resources.

Meanwhile, in Eastbourne, the Environment Agency (EA) has proposed a comprehensive plan to protect the coastline from flooding and erosion over the next century, affecting approximately 18,000 homes and businesses. The plan includes importing sand and shingle to widen the coastal area, raising timber groynes, and adapting to climate change impacts, such as anticipated sea level rises of at least one meter by the end of the century.

Residents are invited to participate in public sessions to discuss these flood protection plans, which aim to enhance community resilience against the increasing frequency of severe weather events.
