Construction of New National Gallery in Budapest to Begin in 2025

The construction of the new National Gallery in Budapest's City Park is set to commence in 2025, with plans to open by the end of the decade, according to Városliget Zrt.

The gallery will occupy the site of the previously demolished Petofi Hall and will house the modern collections of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Hungarian National Gallery. It has received a valid building permit, and a public procurement procedure has already begun.

Upon completion, the National Gallery will provide access to significant national exhibition spaces for photography, ethnography, music, and visual arts along a unique walking axis.

The Hungarian government remains committed to the project, which is a vital component of the revitalization of City Park, aiming to transform it into a prominent cultural quarter in Europe.

The architectural design has been selected through an international competition and will be executed by the renowned Japanese firm SANAA, winners of the prestigious Pritzker Prize.

This initiative is part of the Liget Budapest Project, currently the largest cultural urban development project in Europe, which aims to enhance the green areas and recreational functions of the 100-hectare City Park.
