Goya Awards 2023: Notable Absences and Tight Competition

The 39th Goya Awards ceremony, held in Granada on February 8th, was marked by notable absences and a fierce competition between the most nominated films. Pedro Almodóvar, nominated for Best Director for 'The Next Room', was unable to attend due to a "domestic accident", while his leading actresses, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, were also absent due to "scheduling conflicts". Penelope Cruz, who was scheduled to present an award, was forced to cancel her participation due to the flu.

In terms of competition, 'El 47', with 14 nominations, and 'La infiltrada', with 13, emerged as the favorites of the night. However, 'Segundo Premio', by Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez, 'The Next Room', by Almodóvar, and 'La virgen roja', by Paula Ortiz, also had strong chances. These films will compete for the key awards of the night, including Best Film and Best Director.
