On August 14th, the town of Kyustendil in Southwestern Bulgaria celebrates the holiday of Panagia - Raising of the Bread. This festive occasion is closely linked to the church holiday known as the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, observed on August 15th.
The origins of this holiday stem from a deep-rooted tradition where local women engage in a ritual of kneading and baking bread, a practice that reflects their devotion and connection to the spiritual significance of the day. This year, the ritual bread was prepared at the 'Holy Assumption' church in the heart of Kyustendil, commencing with a prayer and a service. The wheat used in this sacred process is consecrated, symbolizing its importance in the ritual.
On Assumption Day, a ceremonial display of the ritual bread will be held outside the Ritual Home in Kyustendil, featuring a liturgy led by Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil, who will bless the three loaves baked in the churchyard.
As locals gather to honor the Mother of God, the Panagia celebration not only strengthens community bonds but also reinforces cultural traditions that have been passed down through generations.
