Food Waste: A Climate Change Culprit

Food waste contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) defines food waste as food discarded along the food supply chain that is still fit for consumption. This includes unused ingredients, plate waste, and packaged food nearing its expiration date.

Food waste accounts for approximately 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Without intervention, this will further contribute to climate change.

To address this issue, sustainable food systems must be implemented. This includes public awareness campaigns highlighting the consequences of food waste and promoting reduction strategies. Encouraging partnerships between food industries and food banks will increase the collection of wasted food for distribution to vulnerable populations.
