The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has reported significant advancements in environmental technologies within the cruise sector, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.

Fleet Profile:

  • 303 ships with a total capacity of 635,000 lower berths, a 3.6% increase from last year.

  • 35% small ships (<1,000 lower berths), 38% mid-size (1,000-3,000), 26% large (≥3,000).

Fuel Flexibility:

  • 19 ships (7% of fleet) utilize LNG, reducing GHG emissions by up to 20% and NOx emissions by approximately 85%.

  • Future capabilities for renewable biodiesel and green methanol are being developed.

Selective Catalytic Reduction Technology (SCR):

  • 71 ships (25% of fleet) equipped with SCR, a 34% increase from 2023, reducing nitrogen oxide emissions.

Onshore Power Supply (OPS):

  • 147 ships (52% of fleet) can connect to OPS, achieving up to 98% emissions reduction while docked.

  • 239 ships expected to utilize OPS by 2028.

Advanced Wastewater Treatment Systems (AWTS):

  • 225 ships (80% of fleet) equipped with AWTS, exceeding MARPOL standards.

Freshwater Production:

  • 267 ships (94% of reporting fleet) produce fresh water onboard, with 60% capable of meeting total consumption.
