Reviving Traditional Wrestling: A New Training Camp in Nagaland

The Sumi Wrestling Association (SWA), in collaboration with the Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA), has initiated a 10-day intensive wrestling training camp at the town hall in Pughoboto, Nagaland. This program aims to promote traditional wrestling, a sport deeply rooted in the culture of the region.

During the launch, Viketouzo Meyase, the Vice President of NWA, highlighted the significance of wrestling, which has been practiced by the local forefathers for generations. He shared that NWA wrestlers recently achieved remarkable success at the AITWPF 12 National Traditional Wrestling and Pankration Championship 2024 in Dehradun, securing a total of 54 medals, marking a historic milestone for the association.

Looking ahead, the Asian Belt Wrestling Championship is set to take place in Kohima from November 17 to 23, with participation confirmed from over 20 Asian countries, as well as representatives from Africa and Europe. Naga style wrestling is anticipated to be included as a medal event in this championship.

The SWA has extended an invitation to its wrestlers to participate in the upcoming 17th International Naga Wrestling Championship 2024, scheduled for December 4 in Kohima. The training camp has attracted approximately 26 wrestlers, including five women, with notable NWA wrestlers serving as coaches.
