Trump's Return to Power: Fox News Reigns Supreme

Since assuming the presidency, Donald Trump has prioritized Fox News, granting the network exclusive interviews and favors. This close relationship, while seemingly beneficial for both sides, has a history of tension.

Fox News, owned by Rupert Murdoch, secured the first televised interview with Trump in the Oval Office, conducted by Sean Hannity, known for his close ties to the former president. The network has also been favored over other media outlets, with White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt referencing Fox News when addressing inquiries about Elon Musk's criticism of Trump's investments.

Fox News's primetime programming features a strong focus on Trump, with its anchors promoting his merchandise and celebrating his presidency. Jeffrey McCall, a communication professor at DePauw University, attributes this to the network's desire to reach the “MAGA” crowd, Trump's core constituency.

The network boasts high ratings, claiming 71% of primetime news channel viewers and even attracting a significant portion of Democrats and Independents. While the influence of traditional media has declined, Trump remains a loyal consumer of Fox News, which holds significant sway among congressional elites.

Despite the current honeymoon phase, the relationship between Trump and Fox News has been marked by conflict in the past. Trump has criticized the network for its coverage of the 2020 election and for its perceived softness on Kamala Harris. Some Fox News commentators also distanced themselves from Trump following the January 6th Capitol riot.

The current administration is seen as more empowered than its predecessor, with fewer restraints from media and Congress. This suggests a potential for greater influence from Fox News in shaping the political landscape.
