Malaysian pop-punk band Bunkface will not be opening for American punk rock band Green Day at their upcoming Kuala Lumpur concert on February 18th. This decision comes after a circulating screenshot of an email from organizer Live Nation Malaysia, notifying ticket holders of the change, went viral on social media.
Live Nation Malaysia cited logistical, scheduling, and production adjustments as the reason for removing Bunkface. While no replacement act has been announced, the main performance by Green Day will proceed as planned. The news has been met with rejoicing by some local fans online, who had previously criticized the choice of Bunkface as the opening act.
Bunkface had faced scrutiny for penning the 'Malaysia Madani' theme song for the current Malaysian government, a move seen as contrasting with Green Day's known political, anti-establishment, and social activism through their music. The Green Day Live in Kuala Lumpur concert will take place at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil, marking the first time the 'American Idiot' band performs in Malaysia.
