Amnesty Brazil Protests Amazon Oil Expansion

Edited by: Dmitry Drozd

On July 5, 2025, Amnesty International Brazil staged a performance on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro to raise awareness about the risks of expanding oil exploration in the Amazon and the use of fossil fuels.

The action involved displaying three beached Amazonian river dolphins covered in oil at Posto 3 on the beach, symbolizing the environmental impacts and threats to the region's biodiversity. The choice of Copacabana, a major tourist spot, was strategic to draw public attention to the urgent need to rethink the country's energy and environmental policies.

The protest served as an alert about the real and imminent dangers of oil exploration expansion in the Amazon. Amnesty International Brazil opposes fossil fuel use, advocating for a transition to renewable and sustainable energy sources, emphasizing the importance of public policies that prioritize environmental protection and the rights of communities affected by natural resource exploitation.

The organization highlights that protecting the Amazon is everyone's responsibility, urging society to defend this natural heritage, essential for global climate balance and the survival of various species, including Amazonian river dolphins.

Amnesty International Brazil calls on the public to unite in defending the Amazon and supporting sustainable development initiatives that do not compromise the environment or the rights of local communities.
