USAID Suspension: Global Aid System Faces Uncertainty Amid US Funding Pause Impacting Key Programs

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) suspended operations for 90 days, pausing most international aid work. This action, initiated by the Trump administration, has sparked international concern due to its potential to destabilize vulnerable regions and halt progress in economic development, health, and human rights. USAID, since 1961, has operated in approximately 130 countries, providing relief and supporting economic advancement. A shutdown could result in a US$40 billion annual reduction in international aid, affecting food security, disaster relief, and health interventions in countries like Yemen, South Sudan, and Syria. Programs addressing HIV/AIDS, vaccinations, and maternal care may face cuts. The EU, through its Global Gateway Initiative, and China, via the Belt and Road Initiative, could potentially fill the void. Development banks and the private sector may also increase funding. The situation reflects shifts in global politics and tests international cooperation.
