UN Warns of Escalating Rights Abuses in Sudan Amid Spreading Conflict and Widespread Impunity

The United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) issued a warning on Tuesday regarding the escalating human rights abuses in Sudan. The OHCHR report indicates that the ongoing conflict, now spanning over 22 months, has led to widespread attacks on civilians, healthcare facilities, and schools, as well as ethnically motivated executions.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, stated that the attacks and abuses demonstrate a failure to respect international law and may constitute war crimes. The report calls for swift investigations and accountability for those responsible.

The conflict has triggered a severe displacement crisis, with over 12 million people internally displaced and 3.3 million fleeing across borders. Food security and healthcare have collapsed, leaving nearly 25 million people facing acute hunger. The report also highlights the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, with numerous incidents documented.

The report recommends expanding the arms embargo and the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to cover all of Sudan.
