Asteroid 2024 YR4: Scientists Warn of Limited Time to Prepare for Potential 2032 Impact

Scientists are on alert regarding asteroid 2024 YR4, which has a nearly 2% chance of hitting Earth in 2032. The asteroid, measuring 40-90 meters wide, will make a close flyby on December 22, 2032. Volcanologist Robin George Andrews warns that eight years may not be enough to prepare. Astronomers plan to use the James Webb Space Telescope in March to determine the asteroid's composition and size. Andrews suggests that if deflection is attempted in 2028, a stronger method, possibly a larger impactor or a nuclear explosive device, might be needed.
