Y Combinator (YC), a well-known startup accelerator, is urging the U.S. government to support Europe's Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA is designed to limit the market power of major tech companies like Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta, and Microsoft. It aims to prevent these companies from engaging in anti-competitive practices and to promote interoperability among different platforms. YC argues that the DMA aligns with American values by encouraging innovation and competition, especially for smaller tech startups. In a letter to the White House, YC stated that the DMA could create new opportunities for American startups in fields such as AI, search, and consumer apps. This is because the DMA prevents larger companies from suppressing competition. YC uses Apple's delayed LLM-powered Siri as an example of the lack of competitive pressure. They note that third-party AI voice assistants struggle to integrate into Apple's ecosystem. YC's support for the DMA shows its dedication to creating a fair environment for new tech companies and challenging the dominance of Big Tech.
