On March 12, 2025, SpaceX successfully launched 21 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. Thirteen of these satellites are equipped with Direct to Cell capabilities, marking a significant step in expanding global internet access. The Falcon 9 first stage booster supporting this mission completed its 22nd flight, demonstrating the reusability of SpaceX's technology.
T-Mobile has partnered with Starlink to bring satellite internet connectivity to mobile phones across the United States. This collaboration, the first FCC-approved partnership of its kind, aims to provide connectivity to consumers outside T-Mobile's terrestrial network, particularly improving access to emergency services in underserved areas. The beta program offers text messaging via the phone's native messaging app, including access to 911. Future plans include support for photo messaging, data services, and voice calls.
The T-Mobile Starlink beta is available to anyone on any carrier until July 2025. After the launch, the service will be included at no extra cost on T-Mobile's Go5G Next plan. Customers on other plans can add it for $15/month. This initiative seeks to eliminate mobile dead zones and promote competition in the space economy by fostering collaboration between satellite and terrestrial operators.
