In Bromyard, a community initiative called the Sheds Together Cookery Club is bringing older adults together through the shared enjoyment of cooking. This project, backed by Age UK Wyvern and Herefordshire Council, provides a welcoming environment every Monday at Bromyard Methodist Church for those aged 50 and over to connect, create, and enjoy meals together.
The club operates from 10 am to 2:30 pm, offering a structured yet relaxed setting for participants to explore various recipes and cooking techniques. For a fee of £3 per session, which includes all ingredients and equipment, attendees can prepare and cook dishes, share meals, and take home any leftovers. This initiative serves as a vital social hub, addressing the growing concerns of loneliness and isolation among older adults by fostering connection, conversation, and creativity.
Members have shared the profound impact the club has had on their lives. Beverly Woodyatt described it as a social lifeline, particularly after a period of ill health. Johnny Powell, a regular for two years, has found immense value in the club, enjoying the meals and acquiring new skills. Lynsey Hunting, who leads the sessions, emphasizes the group's focus on exploring diverse recipes and methods, ensuring an engaging experience. Volunteer Angela Reader finds the club a rewarding way to contribute to the community.
The benefits of such programs extend beyond the kitchen. Research consistently shows that cooking classes for seniors promote social engagement, improve mental sharpness through cognitive stimulation, and encourage gentle physical activity. These activities can boost confidence and independence while expanding culinary horizons. The social aspect is particularly crucial in combating loneliness, a significant health risk for the elderly. Age UK Wyvern's commitment to supporting older adults is also evident in their other initiatives, including 'Make and Mend' workshops and digital cafés, all aimed at enhancing community connection and well-being across Herefordshire and South Worcestershire.
