UK Records Hottest May Start: Employers Advised on Workplace Safety

The UK recently saw its warmest May start on record, with London temperatures hitting 29.3°C, surpassing the 1990 record of 27.4°C. While warm weather is generally enjoyed, employers need to ensure employee safety and well-being.

UK regulations mandate a "reasonable indoor temperature" in workplaces. Employers should conduct risk assessments to identify and address heat-related hazards. This includes ensuring good ventilation, providing cool water, and offering flexible schedules to reduce exposure during peak heat.

Relaxing dress code restrictions, where possible, to allow more comfortable clothing can also help, while still adhering to PPE guidelines. These measures can prevent heat exhaustion and promote a safe, productive work environment during the heatwave.
