Portland Battles Record Heat, Aarau Fights Invasive Species

Portland, Oregon, is facing an unprecedented heat wave, with temperatures hitting record highs. On June 8, 2025, the city recorded 96°F, surpassing the previous record of 94°F set in 1955. In response, the city has activated cooling resources, including cooling centers, shelters, community centers, libraries, and misting stations. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and check on vulnerable individuals.

Meanwhile, in Aarau, Switzerland, volunteers known as the "Aarau Rangers" are actively combating invasive neophytes like Canadian goldenrod and black locust since 2022. The group, supported by the city, removes these plants to protect local biodiversity. Their activities include removing invasive species and other tasks in the forest, such as creating piles of branches or maintaining ponds.

This collaborative effort in Aarau and Portland's response to extreme heat demonstrate communities working to protect their environment and residents' well-being.
