The 16th Finance Commission of India, led by Chairman Dr. Arvind Panagariya, visited Rakhigarhi in April 2025, a significant site of the Harappan Civilization, one of the world's oldest urban cultures. The visit offered the commission a firsthand look at the 6000-year-old civilization and its historical importance.
During their visit, the commission members explored the various mounds and examined artifacts unearthed during excavations. An exhibition showcased remains, providing insights into the Harappan people's lifestyle and societal structures. Rakhigarhi, located in Haryana, is recognized as one of the largest Harappan sites in the Indian subcontinent.
Archaeological findings reveal Rakhigarhi as a well-developed city with sophisticated infrastructure. Houses were constructed using bricks, and residents used various earthen utensils. Clay toys indicate the importance of childhood and leisure, while women adorned themselves with clay jewelry. Excavations have also uncovered skilled craftsmanship and urban planning, including clay tools, makeup items, and wall paintings. The city featured well-planned roads, drainage systems, and guard rooms, with bead-making workshops highlighting specialized production and the use of ivory items indicating trade.
