In today's world, young people face a complex web of challenges, and socioeconomic status (SES) significantly impacts their academic journeys. The youth of today are growing up in a world where digital fluency is increasing, but also where challenges with motivation, loneliness, and lack of structure are prevalent. Research indicates that children from low-income families are twice as likely to experience learning difficulties, often starting high school significantly behind their higher-SES peers. One key factor is the availability of resources. Adolescents from lower SES backgrounds often lack access to the same educational resources, such as quality schools, tutoring, and enrichment activities, as their more affluent peers. This can lead to a widening achievement gap as they progress through school. Furthermore, the home environment plays a crucial role. Low literacy and numeracy levels, combined with potential health problems, can negatively affect a child's academic skill development. However, it's not all bleak. Several studies highlight the importance of interventions. Programs that promote purpose development and internal control over academic success have shown positive results. Schools can also play a vital role in nurturing developmental assets, such as commitment to learning and positive identity, which can promote academic achievement. The focus should be on providing support systems that address the unique challenges faced by youth from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, ensuring that every young person has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
