Hezbollah Launches Attacks on Israeli Military Base Amid Escalating Conflict

On October 6, 2024, Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group, confirmed it launched rockets at an Israeli military base near Haifa, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. This attack is part of a series of assaults that included drone strikes targeting another military installation in the region.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that six individuals were injured in the rocket attack, which Hezbollah claimed was a response to the death of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, in an Israeli airstrike in late September 2024.

The day of the attack also saw Israeli bombings against targets in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, coinciding with the anniversary of a Hamas terrorist attack that had previously triggered a major Israeli military operation in Gaza, resulting in over 40,000 deaths and 97,000 injuries.

Since the conflict expanded into Lebanon, more than 2,000 people have died, and 1.2 million have been displaced due to Israeli bombings. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) expressed deep concern over Israel's military actions near its positions, describing them as 'extremely dangerous' and a threat to the safety of peacekeeping forces.

UNIFIL reiterated the necessity of protecting UN personnel and assets, urging both Lebanon and Israel to adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which mandates only peacekeeping forces and the Lebanese army to operate in southern Lebanon, prohibiting the presence of non-state armed groups like Hezbollah.
